What is 100% Pasture Fed?
There is no legal definition of what foods can be called ‘grass fed’ in the UK, however under DEFRA rules animals only require 51% of their diet to be grass based. The rest of their diet can be cereals, imported soya, manufactured feeds or by-products from food manufacturing like bread and biscuit waste.
100% pasture fed, on the other hand, means the animal’s diet comes entirely from grass and forage for its whole life with no grains or concentrates at all. Grazing fresh grass when it’s growing and eating conserved grass (such as hay or silage) through the winter.
Due to our climate most UK cattle graze during the summer and eat silage/hay and grain in winter, particularly in the 80–90 days prior to slaughter when farmers are fattening the animals on a grain rich diet. Every day they are fed grain they lose their valuable store of useful Omega-3 fatty acids. The result is meat or dairy with a significant decrease in essential nutrients.
100% pasture fed meat and milk also contains three to five times more conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) than similar products from animals fed grain based diets. Scientists now believe that CLA may be one of our most potent defences against cancer.
The only recognised certification for 100% pasture fed milk and meat in the UK is operated by Pasture For Life, and we are proud to be a member as pasture fed farming is about keeping diets natural, and closely connected to the land and farming in a way that cows are truly designed for.
